Could Bitcoin Power the Next Generation of Trust-Minimized Prediction Markets?

Prediction markets are becoming an interesting intersection of blockchain technology, real-time data, and artificial intelligence. The basic idea is simple: participants make predictions about future events, while a reliable mechanism determines the eventual outcome.

The difficult part is not necessarily creating the market—it is proving that the outcome used for settlement is accurate and trustworthy.

This also raises an interesting question from a Bitcoin perspective: could Bitcoin provide the settlement layer for a prediction market while minimizing the need to trust a centralized intermediary?

Bitcoin's scripting system is intentionally constrained, but several technologies could potentially be relevant. Discreet Log Contracts (DLCs) can create contracts whose settlement depends on an externally reported event. Multisignature arrangements can distribute control among multiple participants, while oracle designs can provide information about real-world events.

A possible architecture could look like this:

Prediction → External Data → Oracle Agreement → Bitcoin Contract → Settlement

The key challenge is the oracle. Even if the Bitcoin transaction itself is fully verifiable, participants still need confidence that the external information used to trigger settlement is correct.

This leads to several important technical questions:
